The future of Suffolk Downs will begin to come into focus a week
from today when the Joint Committee on Government Regulations opens
hearings on racing and gaming.
The committee, co-chaired by Sen. Tom Norton (D-Fall River)
and Rep. Bill Galvin (D-Brighton), will conduct televised hearings
in Gardner Auditorium, with Tuesday's concentrating on racing and
Wednesday's on gaming, such as Off Track Betting and a lottery tied
to racing.
No one knows what changes are in store, but everyone knows the
old order is dead.
"There is no bill for Suffolk Downs," said Norton yesterday.
"But we have 25 bills in front of us on racing, and Tuesday will be
a long day.
