Standing a short distance from two nude dancing
establishments, Mayor Flynn yesterday signed into law a zoning plan
that seeks to transform the remnant of the adult entertainment
district known as the Combat Zone, once notorious for prostitution
and drug dealing, into a haven for theater and arts.
In signing the Midtown Cultural District Zoning Plan, Flynn
criticized the House budget bill, which cuts in half funding for
the Massachusetts Council on Arts and Humanities, to $9.5 million.
"This is an exciting day but much work needs to be done," said
Flynn. "We have the will and the guts to fight. We cannot be put
aside because of the short-sighted policy at the State House.
