SEATTLE - All of us boys of a certain age grew up with
Seton Hall. Oh, Clair Bee, the LIU coach who gave us Chip Hilton,
might have denied it at times, but never was there a doubt that
Chip Hilton himself was modeled on Bob Davies, the Bob Davies who
was Seton Hall of the early 1950s. Walter Dukes and Bobby Wanzer
and Richie Reagan, yes, all of them Pirates, but none compared to
Bob Davies.
For Davies was Chip Hilton.
Chip Hilton played for Valley Falls, but we all knew he
really played for Seton Hall. And when Rip Miner of Steeltown or
even when that evil Jinx Jennings, coach of Delford, forced Valley
Falls to play after Chip Hilton's train broke down and the Valley
Falls ...
