A psychiatrist called by the prosecution, sharply differing
with three defense witnesses, testified yesterday that former
Merrill Lynch stockbroker Lonnie L. Gilchrist Jr. was sane when he
fatally shot his boss more than a year ago.
Dr. Martin Kelly testified that while Gilchrist might have
been experiencing the "highly human emotional state" of rage during
the April 7, 1988, shooting, he was not psychotic.
Kelly's assessment came on the final day of testimony in the
first-degree murder trial of Gilchrist in Suffolk Superior Court.
Gilchrist, 42, of the South End, is accused of repeatedly
shooting, pistol-whipping and kicking Merrill Lynch regional vice
president George W. Cook as ...
