The opposable thumb has come in really handy over the millennia,
but modern thumbologists agree that it was not until the late 20th
century that the thumb truly fulfilled its potential in Gene Siskel
and Roger Ebert and their TV show, "All Thumbs."
In its early years the show had been called "At the Movies."
Siskel and Ebert would sit around arguing, insulting each other and
occasionally even discussing which newly released movies were
worse than others.
But as time and the show wore on, it became clear to its
producers that viewers wanted less talk and more thumbs. Eventually
it evolved into the present format, in which film clips of new
