If ever a Hall of Fame is created for high tech start-ups,
Apollo Computer Inc. will surely be included -- despite a tarnished
record in the end that led to yesterday's stunning announcement
that Apollo will be sold to Hewlett-Packard Co.
Just as Digital Equipment Corp. ushered in the minicomputer
industry, and Lotus Development Corp. established the desktop
software market, Apollo was the rare start-up that created an
entire new industy.
Now Apollo is history, destined be folded into one of the
