The Daughters of the American Revolution, bastion of
conservative respectability, have chosen a 16-year old Soviet
emigre to receive an award for her essay on responsibility under
the US Constitution.
A junior at Brookline High School who came to this country
with her family in 1980, Olga Itkin saw an announcement for the
contest in the school newsletter, went home and tapped out her
979-word essay, using the family computer.
She and nine other winners will be honored later this month at
a banquet, with former Chief Justice Warren E. Burger acting as
host. Burger is chairman of the Commission on the Bicentennial of
the US Constitution, which co-sponsored the contest.
