Former Merrill Lynch stockbroker Lonnie L. Gilchrist Jr. was
convicted by a Suffolk County jury yesterday of first-degree murder
in the shooting last April of his boss, George W. Cook.
The verdict came less than four hours after the jury in the
emotionally charged, three-week trial sent a note to Superior Court
Judge John Irwin reporting it was deadlocked, after 26 hours of
deliberations over five days.
After learning of the impasse, Irwin urged the 12-member panel
to resume deliberations. Twice last week the jury asked to rehear
the legal definition of insanity, which was the crux of the defense
mounted by Gilchrist's lawyers.
