NEW YORK - Kevin Costner, riding high, is testing his
appeal in three consecutive films. First, "Field of Dreams,"
opening Friday. Then, "Revenge," due this summer. Finally, "Lt.
Dunbar," with which he'll make his directing debut. Although "Field
of Dreams" differs from "Bull Durham," it shares a baseball
background, having been adapted from W. P. Kinsella's novel
"Shoeless Joe." Before "Bull Durham" grossed $50 million, baseball
movies were considered box-office poison. But two successful
baseball movies in a row? That would be Hollywood's equivalent of
Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak.
"Revenge" is a violent film in which Costner does not play a
nice guy -- he cuckolds Anthony ...
