Rehabilitating historical buildings can produce tax breaks but owners must either rent out the renovated property or turn it into a business to realize the tax credits, says a new report by the Real Estate Center at Texas A&M University.

"Not only can taxpayers realize the tax breaks, but they can earn profits with improvements that increase the prestige of the historic structure, said Dr. Larry Crumbley, author of the report with Anthony Billings of Florida A&M University.
