The Museum of Transportation at Larz Anderson Park, Brookline,
has launched it most ambitious exhibit yet -- and it soars.
"Putting America on Wheels: New England Paves the Way"
celebrates the beginnings and early growth of the automobile
industry in New England and, if that sounds just too, too
provincial it's probably because you don't know your history. The
American automobile business did start in New England -- in
Massachusetts to be specific, Springfield to be exact. The first
viable gasoline powered vehicle built in North America that could
qualify as an automobile was built in Springfield by J. Frank and
Charles E. Duryea in 1897.
