This week, swathed in stars and stripes, Abbie Hoffman sits
on magazine racks next to checkout counters all over the country.
He's on the cover of People magazine, the people's magazine. He
would have loved it.
He was always fascinated by his own image. He used to talk
about the misleading information that was sometimes published about
him. A composite of this information might start out something
like:
"Six-foot-two blonde Miss Abbey Hoffman, the head of the
Communist Party, left her fashionable Fifth Avenue penthouse
yesterday and . . ."
A lot of people loathed Abbie and everything he stood for. I
don't think even he understood the depth of their hostility to him.
