The American Lawn is a subsidiary of the American Dream.
Suburbanites and the few urbanites who can afford a patch of green
are often obsessed with attaining a plush and perfect lawn, a sort
of living Astroturf. The trouble is that they rarely take time to
weed and water it deep enough, mow it high enough, loaf on it or
get to know its clumps and its thatch, its sun and its shade so
well that it thrives. Sometimes lawn owners don't even know what
kind of grasses are in their lawn, because they've been persuaded
that all they need to know is how to spread weed killer.
