Article: STACY HOLMES, 80, WAS PUBLICIST FOR FILENE'S STORE FOR 33 YEARS

Stacy Holmes, publicist at Filene's from 1940 until retirement in 1973, was invited to address the Publicity Club last summer and startled everyone by asking, "How many recall what public relations was like in Boston 50 years ago?"

They laughed, for many of them were not alive 50 years ago. "No one?" said Mr. Holmes. "Good; then I can say things that happened 50 year ago and nobody's going to call me a liar."

Whatever else he was called, Mr. Holmes, who died in his sleep yesterday at age 80, was never called a liar. In 33 years as a publicist, he set a standard for integrity and also established a reputation for civility and whimsy.
