Both Michael Dukakis and New York's Mario Cuomo are staunch
opponents of the death penalty. Neither one had any trouble getting
elected governor despite polls showing the majority of voters in
their states favor capital punishment.
Yet the issue keeps coming back, because many voters still
believe it is the only way to stop murders and other major violence.
Right now, it's New York's turn to deal with the issue. Next
year, during the gubernatorial campaign, it may once again be a hot
issue in Massachusetts.
Despite the New York legislature's vote to reinstate the death
penalty in New York, Cuomo stood his ground and vetoed the approved
legislation, as he had done on every occasion. ...
