The WNEV-TV sound stage was hushed and empty, as barren as a
Beckett stage set. Hunched over a table, dressed in blue denim and
black Nikes, John Cage -- grand old man of the American
avant-garde and the subject of an upcoming Channel 7 profile --
prepared to break the rules of yet another medium. He removed his
reading glasses and pushed aside a pile of annotated sheets.
Flashing a self-effacing grin, he addressed himself to the subject
of television, a medium in which he professes little interest and
even less hands-on experience.
"I never watch television," confessed Cage, 77, who has made
"multimedia" a personal epithet. "The last time it grabbed me was
