The article "Neighbors Get Tough Over Talbot Bridge" {Maryland
Weekly, Oct. 3} seemed to imply that it is perfectly okay for angry
citizens to eschew the democratic process and use "loud, disruptive,
gimmicky" tactics to intimidate officials to get their own way.
The reporter sat in on planning session by some North Woodside
residents of Silver Spring on how to force the permanent closure of
the Talbot Bridge, even though for 20 years different county
administrations have said "no" to all petitions and pleas directed
to that end. County Executive Doug Duncan now is reviewing both
sides of the argument (yet again!) before deciding the bridge's
fate.
