BREWSTER - Mayor Flynn yesterday toured Massachusetts'
version of a "boot camp," the alternative to prison he is pushing
for young criminals, but afterwards he and the state's youth
services commissioner continued to disagree on whether tougher
paramilitary training would be useful.
Earlier this month, Flynn endorsed boot camps -- programs of
30 to 180 days of rigorous military-style training for offenders
now in use in Mississippi and other southern states -- as part of a
five-part youth campaign including expanded job and mentoring
programs.
Yesterday Flynn visited the state's Homeward Bound program,
modeled on Outward Bound, which annually serves 340 youths awaiting
