THE BOSTON POPS, John Williams, conductor, in a concert in
Symphony Hall last night.
The Boston Pops is the first orchestra Leonard Bernstein ever
heard, and it was probably the first professional orchestra he ever
conducted -- he won a contest, and the prize was the chance to lead
a performance of Wagner's overture to "Die Meistersinger" on the
Esplanade in the summer of 1940.
His career subsequently developed in another direction --
several of them, in fact -- and until last night he had conducted
the Pops on only one other occasion: Harvard Night the year of his
25th class reunion. Time flies, and last night it was time for
