Perennial Library has issued in a uniform edition three of
Penelope Lively's more notable novels; each is $7.95. "Judgment
Day" takes a church pageant in a rural English community and
produces "short, sharp and, though it addresses important
questions, thoroughly unpretentious" effects, Elizabeth Noyes wrote
in her 1981 Globe review. In 1984, Robert Taylor hailed Lively's
"According to Mark" -- which partakes of literary detective novel,
meditation on biography and incongruous love story -- for its
"uncommon grace and intelligence." Last year, Taylor similarly
