PROFITABILITY
When it comes to market value, you can divide Massachusetts'
public companies into two categories: Digital Equipment Corp. and
everyone else.
Digital's market value -- the number of shares outstanding
multiplied by the price per share -- stood at $11.7 billion on May
19, the day the our ranking was put together. That was more than
twice the value of Raytheon, the second company on the list. Or to
put it another way, for the price you would have to pay to buy
Digital, you could buy Raytheon, Gillette and Affiliated
Publications together, the second, third and fourth most valuable
