PITTSFORD, N.Y. - No words can be minced. A watershed day came
for Tom Kite yesterday on the waterlogged beauty of Oak Hill, and
it was as if Tom Kite had been propelled over a waterfall. Tom Kite
ended up in pieces, gravely injured, putting forth a catastrophic
-- nay, grotesque -- effort he may see every time he arcs his golf
club into a backswing.
That the day had started with such promise was such a cruel
swipe of irony. Aren't all first holes that way, full of such
potential, Mark McCumber so loose on the first tee that he was able
to joke with the cameramen to his right, "No Fuji, right? This is
Rochester and only Kodak's allowed in your cameras . . . no Fuji
film in Rochester." ...
