For years, hay fever sufferers faced a painful tradeoff: if they wanted to stop their noses from running and their eyes from itching, they had to put up with drowsiness, a side effect of all the antihistamines on the market.

Seldane changed all that. Introduced in 1985, the new drug offered the same relief as the existing products without the sedation. It wasn't a cure for cancer, but for people with allergies it was no small achievement.
