NEW BEDFORD - The clubhouse is 33 years old and washed red like
a barn, which gives one the wrong impression, but there it stands,
a short walk in from the brine. There are two doors that squeal as
a visitor enters, and the hall inside is dark where rumors of pool
and foosball gather with the men speaking Portuguese. They are
members of the Portuguese Sports Club, paying dues of $20 annually
(plus bar tab) to keep the soccer team alive.
But the soccer team is different this year -- younger,
restive. The players stroll through the club after their practices
