One of a series of occasional articles on the abortion
debate.
They are still arriving at her chambers at the rate of 1,000 a
day, letters urging her alternately to respect or rescind the 1973
ruling that established a constitutional right to abortion.
Her eight colleagues are besieged, too, but it is to Justice
Sandra Day O'Connor that partisans on both sides of the abortion
case look for affirmation on the most divisive social issue of the
day.
By fluke or by fate, the first woman to serve on the nation's
highest court could cast the deciding vote this week in an abortion
debate that has raged unabated for 16 years.
