HONG KONG - The best sellers in Hong Kong bookshops these
days are "how to" guides on obtaining citizenship in countries
ranging from New Zealand to the Netherlands.
"Following the slaughter in Tiananmen, 1997 looms as never
before," said James Tse, a bank director, referring to the violent
recent government crackdown on prodemocracy demonstrators in
Tiananmen Square. Hong Kong is to revert to Chinese control in that
year.
Tse's family fled to this British colony shortly after the
communists took power in China in 1949. "Even people like myself,
people who remain committed to Hong Kong, are plotting an escape
route," he said. "That is not panic; that is prudence."
