While President Clinton may be enjoying a comfortable lead in
the presidential race, his national support could have
embarrassingly little effect on the political upheaval occurring in
his home state.
For more than half a century Arkansas politics has been
dominated by a handful of powerful Democrats -- Sens. David Pryor,
Dale Bumpers, J.W. Fulbright and John McClellan, and Govs. Orval
Faubus and Bill Clinton, who was elected governor five times. But
according to national and state political leaders, a series of
unexpected events has emboldened Republicans to target what has long
been considered one of the safest Democratic strongholds in the
South.
