In selecting Anne Hawley to be director of the Isabella
Stewart Gardner Museum, the museum's directors may have found the
formula for making this idiosyncratic Boston institution the
exciting cultural attraction that it could be.
As executive director of the Massachusetts Council on the Arts
and Humanities, Hawley has encouraged new forms of artistic
expression and also new and more public ways of thinking about the
arts.
Such skills will be required at the Gardner because of the
strict terms of Mrs. Gardner's will, which allow no additions or
deletions to the collection, or even changes in the way it is
