Dr. Louis Hermanson of Brookline, a surgeon and teacher who
had been affiliated with Beth Israel Hospital since 1929, died
Tuesday. He was 85.
Dr. Hermanson, who had recently finished a 10-year term as
acting chief of surgery at the Veterans Administration Outpatient
Clinic, graduated cum laude from Tufts College Medical School in
1930.
As a fourth-year medical student in 1929 he interned in
surgery at Beth Israel and helped establish a surgical research
laboratory in an abandoned coal bin. Dr. Hermanson's research
dealt with distribution of the gases in the body, postoperative
distentions and adhesions and the effects of hemorrhage. He also
