Robert Bourassa, 63, the former Quebec premier who spent a
career trying to balance his province's tilt toward sovereignty with
his belief in a united Canada, died Oct. 2 of skin cancer at
Montreal's Notre Dame Hospital.
The longtime provincial leader of the Liberal Party led Quebec
through its most tumultuous times, although events seemingly
conspired against his search for a formula to convince Quebecers
that remaining a part of Canada represented a better deal than
independence. His political career began in an era when radical
Quebec separatists were detonating bombs in Montreal.
