VIENNA - Austrian officials said yesterday that about 180
East Germans had crossed the Hungarian border in 24 hours, despite
increased attempts by Hungarian officials to stop them.
In Hamburg, West Germany's Welt am Sonntag newspaper reported
that Hungarian officials had told their West German counterparts
that Soviet and East German concern was growing about the stream of
East Germans fleeing through Hungary.
Bonn officials, meanwhile, told West German radio that Hungary
had repeated assurances that no East German now in Hungary would be
sent home against his will.
Austrian police officials in Eisenstadt, about 10 miles north
of the border, said new refugees were arriving ...
