Article: WEST ROXBURY LARGELY WHITE, BUT SAYS BIAS ISN'T THE REASON

Racial discrimination is a subject that makes many West Roxbury residents uncomfortable.

Several politicians from the neighborhood, when asked, tended to express their personal intolerance of discrimination and a few community leaders addressed the matter only after preparing a written statement or asking not to be identified.

In a community where 1985 census figures show 96 percent of the population is white, compared with 62 percent citywide, many residents are hard-pressed to name any minority neighbors. Only South Boston and Charlestown have a higher white population, each at 97 percent.
