BOURNE - Massachusetts Maritime Academy cadet Mark Wagner
of Plymouth, a 25-year-old who soon will go to sea in his first
ship, spoke for legions of unsung sailors here yesterday in
ceremonies dedicating New England's first memorial to American
merchant seamen.
"This unknown seamen's memorial commemorates the 6,700 . . .
who lost their lives in World War II," Wagner said. He called them
heroes who would have scorned the term "working men." They were, he
said, "civilians, sailors plying their trade and earning a
livelihood for their families."
Wagner heads the academy's Cadet Propellor Club, which under
the direction of academy placement officer Capt. Albert Wilson
raised $35,000 ...
