When Sung J. Liao arranged an acupuncture course for U.S.
physicians in 1972, he did it secretly because "we did not want the
media to know {and} have it misunderstood." Some months later, he
was threatened with dismissal if he used acupuncture in the
Connecticut hospital where he worked. Then a fellow doctor brought
Liao before the state medical society, charging him with
"self-advertising" because he'd been quoted in a newspaper article
on acupuncture.
Back then, "the doctors would tell you you're out of your
mind, you're crazy," said Liao, clinical professor of surgical
sciences at New York University's School of Dentistry. In those
