When Sung J. Liao arranged an acupuncture course for U.S. physicians in 1972, he did it secretly because "we did not want the media to know {and} have it misunderstood." Some months later, he was threatened with dismissal if he used acupuncture in the Connecticut hospital where he worked. Then a fellow doctor brought Liao before the state medical society, charging him with "self-advertising" because he'd been quoted in a newspaper article on acupuncture.
