HALLANDALE, Fla. - Sunday Silence defeated Easy Goer in the
Breeders' Cup Classic at Gulfstream Park yesterday to clinch Horse
of the Year honors.
Flawlessly handled by Chris McCarron, who picked up the mount
after Pat Valenzuela failed a drug test, Sunday Silence got too far
in front of Easy Goer and Pat Day could not make up the ground. At
the wire Sunday Silence, who was 2-1, was a neck in front of Easy
Goer, who was 1-2. Blushing John and Angel Cordero were a length
farther back. The 1 1/4-mile race was run in 2:00 1/5.
"I knew Easy Goer was close in the stretch," said McCarron. "I
