It's never too late to get a flu shot, but if you're one of millions for whom they're recommended, now, before the flu season starts, is the perfect time to do it.

The usual influenza season is December through February. And because the vaccine's protection fades after a few months, November is the standard time for vaccination.

Massachusetts is about halfway through the yearly immunization program; health authorities distributed 250,000 doses of free vaccine to local boards of health and councils on aging, which have been running clinics since the end of October.

Nursing homes have their own supplies, as do private doctors.
