NASHVILLE - It was one of the most aggressive days in Red
Sox history. Back in 1979, the Red Sox went after, and got,
righthanded reliever Skip Lockwood and first baseman Tony Perez.
Last week, the Red Sox overwhelmed catcher Tony Pena.
But yesterday, the Red Sox were the talk of Opryland. They
were making phenomenal bids for two Minnesota Twin free agents --
relief pitcher Jeff Reardon and first baseman Kent Hrbek.
The Red Sox believed they were close to signing Reardon, a
native of Dalton, and certainly giving Hrbek, a Minneapolis native,
something to mull over last night.
"I think we have an edge with Reardon," said Red Sox executive
