Article: BLUE CROSS SEEKS BIG HIKE FOR MEDEX PLAN YEARLY COST WOULD BE INCREASED $500

In a move sure to provoke cries of outrage from the state's senior citizens, Blue Cross-Blue Shield yesterday asked for a dramatic rate hike for Medex, a popular form of health insurance for the elderly.

Blue Cross, which previously asked for a 32 percent Medex cost increase, boosted that request to 78 percent. On the most popular form of Medex, the total increase, if approved, would cost a typical subscriber almost $500 a year. About 300,000 senior citizens in Massachusetts purchase Medex.
