After years of disputes and a gantlet of inspections, the first
U.S.-grown apples to go on sale here faced their ultimate test late
this afternoon in a Tokyo supermarket - consumers like 62-year-old
Takiko Azuma.
Surrounded by a battery of television cameras and hovering
reporters, Azuma sampled a sliver of Golden Delicious. She grimaced.
"It's a bit sour," declared Azuma, who is accustomed to the plump,
juicy and generally flawless fruit produced in Japanese orchards. But
the Red Delicious, she said, was "sweet and tasty." Delighted with
the low - for Japan - introductory price of 50 cents apiece, she
bought five.
