Kevin McHale was named to the All-Star team last week, and he
earned that place averaging just over 30 minutes a game in a sixth
man role. The only other reserve selected was Dennis Rodman, who
since has been moved into Detroit's starting lineup in place of
Mark Aguirre.
The sixth man continues to be one of the best weapons in
basketball. It was the role in which young players such as McHale
and Roy Tarpley staked their claims in the league before moving on
to star status. It was as sixth men that pure shooters such as
Ricky Pierce and Eddie Johnson became such valuable sparks for
their clubs that they are now indispensable.
