Stella (Sampas) Kerouac, widow of Jack Kerouac, the Beat
Generation figure best known for his novel "On the Road," died
Saturday in St. Joseph's Hospital, Lowell. She was 71 and lived in
St. Petersburg, Fla., and with her sister in Dracut.
She and Kerouac, both natives of Lowell, were married in
1966. He died in 1969 in St. Petersburg.
Mrs. Kerouac spoke briefly at the dedication of the Kerouac
Commemorative Memorial at Lowell's Eastern Canal Park on June 25,
1988. Otherwise, when asked to be interviewed about her life with
the Beat writer, she would say, "If you want to know about Jack,
