KUWAIT - Arab leaders and the Palestine Liberation Organization
are coming to the bitter conclusion that they are powerless to halt
the flow of Soviet Jews to Israel.
Throughout the Arab world, the prospect of 750,000 new
immigrants to Israel is regarded with horror. It has reopened the
wounds of 1948, when hundreds of thousands of Palestinians fled or
were pushed from their homes in British-mandated Palestine after
Israel proclaimed its statehood and the surrounding Arab armies
attacked it. It also has dashed Palestinian hopes of negotiating a
settlement with Israel any time soon.
