MANAGUA, Nicaragua - For much of her life, she was an unassuming
housewife without notable political savvy or experience. Now
Violeta Barrios de Chamorro finds herself president-elect of a
deeply divided nation leading a coalition of disparate political
parties who openly revile each other.
Chamorro, who will be inaugurated president on April 25, faces
an extraordinary array of challenges, both economic and political.
Her response will largely determine whether the peaceful election
that catapulted her to the presidency will dissolve into bitter
