A New Yorker magazine cover and - of all things - a McDonald's ad
speak to me in a special way as we pause to remember Martin Luther
King Jr. on the 66th anniversary of his birth.
It's a sober-looking King, eyes filled with pain, we see on the
magazine's front. Seated among the skyscrapers of New York, King
looks out at the homeless, the jobless, the discouraged - all of the
dismalness of today, a stark contrast to his glorious vision.
In the McDonald's ad, the words accompanying his photograph read:
"He who leaves his mark on the world never leaves the world."
King's mark, his dream, was his contract with America. If he were
