Last month, when Andy Rooney was suspended by CBS for remarks
that deeply offended both blacks and gays, many of his colleagues
worried that it wasn't merely his professional future at stake, but
his place in history.
After a 41-year career in broadcast journalism, much of it
served in the largely unsung role of CBS News writer, they feared
that Rooney's obituary would read:
"Veteran CBS newsman Andy Rooney, who became a star on the
top-rated newsmagazine show '60 Minutes' and who was later
dismissed by the network for controversial comments published in a
gay magazine, died yesterday . . ."
The decision Thursday to reinstate Rooney immediately all but
guarantees two things. First, ...
