Hunkered deep within Nassau County Coliseum on Long Island one
warm evening last month, Larry Curtis Johnson slowly lowered his
6-foot-3 1/2-inch, 265-pound frame into a director's chair and
produced a small, honking laugh. The 36-year-old Johnson, who for
the past 13 years has been known by his professional name, Maurice
Starr, was seated inside a portable sound booth tucked some 50
yards behind the arena's vast stage. His dark eyes were fixed on
two television monitors, where his five-boy creation out of Boston,
