George Will's shoddy assault on government involvement in funding
for the humanities {op-ed, Jan. 8} tarnishes the motto of his alma
mater, "Princeton in the Nation's Service." All he sees are self-
serving bureaucracies and unacceptable teaching methods, and to
sharpen his attack he merely distorts his evidence.
He is exercised, first, that state humanities councils are seeking
to convince Congress that they perform an invaluable service. The
reason for their efforts, he suggests, is to preserve the jobs of
their staffs. If they are organizing letter-writing campaigns,
however, what on earth does he think is in those letters? Pleas for
staff jobs? Or reminders that the funds the councils ...
