PROVIDENCE - Michael Katz will tell you these are unusual times in Rhode Island.

In the past few months a half-dozen people a day have looked for work at the bookstore he manages -- about three times the typical number of job seekers, he figures. "I've been here 10 years and I've never seen so many people asking for jobs," says Katz.
