For more than two decades, Grove Hall was left for dead --
abandoned by the city, private investors, whites and
upper-middle-class blacks.
But the spirit that once made this area the mecca for Boston
blacks is being revived by dedicated residents and community
organizers who refuse to give up hope on Grove Hall despite its
shortcomings.
When South African nationalist leader Nelson R. Mandela and
his wife Winnie ride in a motorcade through the neighborhood today,
residents hope that they see evidence of a community trying to
rebound.
Crime has made a statement in Grove Hall because of gangs,
drugs and violence.
But in proud tones, some residents talk about homeowners who
