Article: SENATE REAFFIRMS VOTE FOR GUN BAN

WASHINGTON - Despite a monthlong lobbying blitz by the White House and the National Rifle Association, the Senate reaffirmed its support yesterday for legislation that bans nine semiautomatic weapons.

The Senate also amended President Bush's anticrime bill to impose new mandatory penalties -- ranging from 10-year prison terms to the death penalty -- for a variety of federal crimes committed with any kind of gun.

The 50-48 vote for the gun ban reaffirmed the original surprise May 23 vote of 50-49 in its favor. William Armstrong, a Republican from Colorado, was absent yesterday.
